ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Writing has always been the way I listen more closely to life.

To memory. To family. To grief. To joy. To the questions that refuse to leave us alone.

Marya Patrice Sherron is an author, memoirist, screenwriter, and former professor of Creative Writing and Black Studies whose work explores love, identity, disability, belonging, legacy, and becoming.

She holds an MFA in Creative Writing and writes across genres and generations. Her books include children’s stories, reflective nonfiction, advocacy-centered work, guided journals, and the literary memoir I Was Listening: Love, Legacy, & Becoming. While the forms change, the heart of the work remains constant: an honest attention to the experiences that shape human lives.

Marya’s writing is deeply informed by family, motherhood, caregiving, race, faith, grief, and the complicated beauty of what is handed down. She is drawn to the space between what people say and what we learn by watching them live.

She is also the founder of KĪ Productions, an independent publishing and creative production company established to help meaningful stories find their fullest form. That work supports her larger commitment to stories that amplify voices, create understanding, and make room for people who have too often been overlooked.

Her writing for the screen extends those same concerns into documentary and narrative work, where character, community, and the creation of belonging become visible in motion.

“Some lessons are never taught outright. We absorb them… and spend the rest of our lives discovering that we were listening.”
